1963-66: Played bassoon in the Abingdon Holiday Orchestra for several seasons. Played harpsichord for several of Frances and Alan Kitchings' famous Handel Opera revivals at the Unicorn Theatre, Abingdon. Was committed piano accompanist to violinist friend, Tony Gibbs, for exams, college entrance auditions etc. Tony went on to a career in the Hallé Orchestra.
1965-66 Organ Scholarship exams at Oxbridge; none offered; took place at Sheffield to read law.
1967: Active in Hall and Union music at Sheffield: singing, accompaniment and some organ work.
1968: Took on Chairmanship of Union Music Committee, conducted the Union Choir and sang in Cathedral choir.
1969: Succeeded Alan Thurlow (now organist Chichester Cathedral) as Sheffield Cathedral Organ Student under Graham Matthews.
During these years, had the privilege of accompanying Phillip Langridge, the counter-tenor James Bowman in the Handel operas, Denis O'Neill (TV tenor) at Sheffield, and Patricia Meadmore (Phantom of the Opera).
1970: Moved to London, joined IBM and started computing career.
1972-79: Lived in Barnes and sang regularly in John Bate Choir (Richmond).
1977-81: Assistant Organist (under Graham Thorp) of Putney Parish Church, and during 1980 was full-time organist during Graham's sabbatical (to organise the building of the new Marcussen organ in the new church).
1985 to 1994: Joint Organist of Kingswood Parish Church.
1988-93: ARCO (paperwork Prof. Chris Toon, Trinity College of Music; playing under Richard Popplewell, Chapel Royal).
1990 met Peter Bumstead and commissioned the building of a house organ, completed and installed 1993.
Recitals at Putney, Wandsworth, Kingswood, & Grosvenor Chapel, Mayfair.
Accompanied choral evensong services for visiting choirs at Guildford, Canterbury, Rochester and Southwark Cathedrals, St Albans Abbey, and various concerts.
1993 to 1998: Choir Director & Assistant Organist of Putney Parish Church.
1999 to 2012: Organist of Putney Parish Church (succeeding Graham Thorp). Choir direction was taken over since 2004 when Mark Laflin joined as Director of Music, then Travis Baker from 2010. Graham retired from the Marcussen at the end of 2011, and now plays occasionally at Putney and deputises more locally.
Graham gives organ lessons, up to ABRSM Grade VIII, to teenage and mature students. Organ pupils have usually visited the Hallett home for lessons on the 2-manual Bumstead house organ whose tracker action is quite revealing!
